When the village is attacked by insects known as Onibubu, a sign of the Apocalypse, an evil curse envelops the village making villagers fall into an endless sleep. They send you, the son of the legendary Cocoon Master the Lion of Parel, to venture into the Forest and find a cure for the curse. You soon discover though, the secrets of the Tamamayu - a magical world intertwined with the human realm.

The World is divided into areas locked behind gates that requires keys to open. Each section features distinct set of enemies, environments and sometimes also light puzzles. At it's core, this is a turn-based RPG with monster capture and breeding mechanics. In battle enemies, or minions as they're called, can be captured by playing the Cocoon Master's flute if they've been weakened enough. Before monsters can be summoned however, they must be purified by your wife, Mahbu, back at the village. Once purified, they can be equipped to be used in battle, fused together to create stronger creatures, or spun to silk for selling.

As with many monster breeding games, there's a strong emphasis on leveling up core and elemental attributes which allows for a wide variety of customization. Thankfully you can preview what attributes the new result will have, along with how the new creature will look. Jade Cocoon features handdrawn 2D backgrounds mixed together with 3D to create a distinct look. The soundtrack, composed by Kimitaka Matsumae, has strong influences from jungle and tribal themes and utilizes wooden percussions, bongos, drums and flutes mixed with ambient forest and jungle sounds.
